The 2019 Leukemia and Lymphoma fundraiser began this week at Lawn Avenue School. Fifth through eighth graders are helping to raise money for the cause. I was diagnosed in September 2015, shortly after I was just hired in the Jamestown School District. After my battle with cancer I decided I wanted to give back as much as I could to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and asked for help from my students and the Jamestown community.
This year's fundraiser was put together with the help of many local businesses; Including Jamestown Outdoors, Jamestown Rec. Center, Slice of Heaven and many more. Students, teachers and parents can buy raffle tickets in order to hopefully win one of the prizes, like gift cards, gear, or passes for excursions.
Another way Lawn School is fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society is through a program, Pennies for Patients, or another name for it is "Penny Wars". In this fundraiser, students are trying to collect as many pennies or paper money as they can, and put them into their grade level collection bin. However, silver coins in their own bin are considered "deductions" from their fundraising total. Therefore, students want to put silver coins in other grade level buckets.
Last year, students raised over $4,000 and our goal for this year is $4,500. The fundraising will end the week of April 5th. Thank you for your help!
Rhode Island businesses that have donated to helping Jamestown Schools' fundraiser include:
Newport Restaurant Group, Slice of Heaven, Jamestown Outdoors, Jamestown Rec. Center, Rock Spot Climbing, Launch Trampoline Park, Trinity Rep, Cru Cafe, Wickford Kayak Center, Island Heron Yoga Studio, Monelle of Newport, Newport Polo Club, and the Block Island Ferry.
We are all looking forward to a successful few weeks!
