The Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System, RICAS, was administered for the first time in RI last spring. Students in grades 3 through 8 participated by taking this assessment in Mathematics and English Language Arts. The RI Department of Education made the decision to purchase the Massachusetts State Assessment, MCAS, to use for the RI comprehensive assessment system. We now have a more rigorous assessment that is evaluating our students on the same Common Core Standards that our curriculum is based on.
Among all public school districts that tested in grades 3 - 8 Jamestown is still reporting within the top 10 districts in RI.
In ELA, 59% of our students met or exceeded the expectation.
In Math, 60% of our students met or exceeded the expectation.
There is work to be done and our goal is to ensure all of our students receive high quality instruction in order to meet the rigorous expectations and become successful, responsible learners in our community. Below is a comparison of Jamestown School Department and the state averages in RI and Massachusetts. As you can see we are above the state average in both states.
