Fall '19/20 Issue 6

"Integrity, Courage, Compassion, Curiosity, Collaboration..."

Congratulations to our 2 schools for earning high performance on the RI School Accountability System!

We are very proud of our students and teachers at the Lawn School for receiving 5 out of 5 stars.

They all worked very hard to rise to the challenge to grow from 4 stars in 2018 to 5 stars in 2019!

Congratulations to the Melrose School for receiving 4 out of 5 stars in 2019.

It takes teamwork, perseverance, and dedication to be recognized as a high performing district.

Keep up the hard work!

Math Curriculum under Review

Over the summer the General Assembly approved new educational reform laws for our state. One of the laws creates statewide standards and curriculum framework for six core academic subjects (math, English language arts, science and technology, history and social studies, world languages and arts) that must be developed by the end of the year. The curriculum will be required across the state, and the state will be responsible for providing professional support to local districts to make these changes.

We are partnering with the RI Department of Education and EdReports, a leader in improving education and providing reports on k-12 instructional materials, to evaluate a new high quality math curriculum for our students. Our math curriculum adoption process began in September. Our committee is led by Dr. Duva and includes Math Curriculum Leader/Teacher Ms. Kittredge, Teachers Mr. Juhnowski, Mrs. Simoes & Mr. Alfred, and Melrose Principal Mrs. Werner is also part of the committee. As we listened to our teachers their most important instructional beliefs in math are strong number sense, foundation of basic facts, differentiation, application to real life, problem solving, and that students love math.

We also want to know what is important to our parents. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey.

Garden Club

Stop by the Lawn Ave courtyard and check out the new Garden Club mural. The Lawn Ave Garden club is extremely proud of their design and work on this painting. We are grateful to Mrs. Erica Connelly, Melrose School Art teacher and parent, for helping us make our design come alive. Now we are in a race to get it finished before the snow flies!

Farewell to Mrs. Savago

I would like to wish Ms. Savago the best of luck as she transitions to a new school next week. Ms. Savago has been the 7th grade ELA teacher at the Lawn School since 2014. We will miss Ms. Savago's friendly smile, but wish her well as she found a teaching job closer to her home in Connecticut.
