Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports

When implementing PBIS, it's really not just about focusing solely on the instructional culture, but also intentionally creating a social culture that is critical to making school an effective learning environment.

~Rob Horner

What is PBIS?

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based three-tiered framework for improving and integrating all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. It is a way to support everyone – especially students with disabilities – to create the kinds of schools where all students are successful.

PBIS isn’t a curriculum you purchase or something you learn during a one-day professional development training. It is a commitment to addressing student behavior through systems change. When it’s implemented well, students achieve improved social and academic outcomes, schools experience reduced exclusionary discipline practices, and school personnel feel more effective. (PBIS.org)

What is Positive Behavior Support?

In this TED Talk, School Suspensions are an Adult Behavior by Rosemarie Allen, she explores the function of behavior in regard to student AND adult behavior. It gives an alternative look at how we might shift our perspective and our lenses through which we see problematic behavior.

Supporting Behavioral Needs: A Multi-Tiered Approach

At P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School (K-12) uses a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for behavior and SEL. Designing system of supports like this enables teachers to differentiate and provide each student the right level of instruction to succeed.

PBIS In IUSD

This flowchart was created to support school sites in IUSD with the implementation of a tiered behavior support process that begins with a #RSPCT universal focus. We believe when a strong Tier 1 foundation is in place that addresses the whole child, teams and teachers are able to provide more intensified behavior supports with more efficiency and effectiveness as the need arises.
