PBIS for Families
"Beneath every behavior there is a feeling. And beneath each feeling is a need. And when we meet that need rather than focus on the behavior, we begin to deal with the cause and not the symptom. " ~Ashleigh Warner

What is PBIS?
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based three-tiered framework for improving and integrating all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. PBIS is used to proactively improve school safety while promoting positive behavior. The focus is on prevention and is a way to support ALL students. School teams develop positively stated behavioral expectations that are explicitly taught. Students are taught these expectations throughout different locations of the school and routines within the classroom. Teachers and school site personnel acknowledge students and provide positive feedback to those exhibiting the agreed upon expectations. School sites follow specific protocols on how to respond to behaviors when they do occur. Lastly, school site personnel gather and use data to inform decisions offering intensified supports to those who may need and benefit.

PBIS isn’t a curriculum you purchase or something you learn during a one-day professional development training. It is a commitment to addressing student behavior through systems change. When it’s implemented well, students achieve improved social and academic outcomes, schools experience reduced exclusionary discipline practices, and school personnel feel more effective. (PBIS.org)

PBIS for Parents/Caregivers
Parents and caregivers play such a vital role in the on-going support and efforts of PBIS at school. Partnership between school and home ultimately support the success of students. When parents and caregivers are aware of the school-wide expectations and find ways to integrate the same core values or behavior expectations in the home, this provides children with opportunities to practice these skills and make connections between home and school.
