I joined the Honors College my sophomore year at Indiana University. As a freshman, I wanted to join, but I was intimidated by the other smart and talented students that were already in the Honors College. However, after I joined I was paired with great mentors who have helped me along my Honors College journey. I value strong trusting relationships, and I think that is something I have found in Honors College. There is always someone who is willing to help with any task you need. As an Honors College student I have been successful in achieving volunteer, networking, and internship opportunities because Honors College has many resources available every. For example, resource opportunities and other information is listed in the Honors College weekly newsletter.
I am currently doing an honors contract in my Disability and Society class, and it has provided me with extensive knowledge we do not learn in the class. By doing an honors contract, I can research the class on my own to get a better understanding of how I can benefit society. I am more of a shy student, so I am not quite used to talking to professors outside of class or asking for help. However, asking to meet with my professor about the honors contract encouraged me to go out of my comfort zone and connect with the professor on a potential project I could do. The honors in my field project also encouraged me to talk to a professor and ask them questions about their field. I feel like I have grown as a student because these projects have shaped me to talk to professors and connect with them outside of class.
Along with talking to professors outside of class, Honors College has also encouraged me to talk to future internship and scholarship holders. I have been searching for internships and I have found it is easier to communicate with others about my interests in the field and the potential value I would bring to the studies. Honors College has many studies abroad trips for students to partake in and this is something I am interested in doing. After talking to a professor through the honors in field project, I found that there are many opportunities on campus for research. There is bone research that is currently happening at IU and that is something I am interested in and currently looking into. I would not have known about this research opportunity if it was not for the honors in our field project we did.
After joining the Honors College, I feel like I have grown as a student both in the classroom and outside. I have many new opportunities to join research studies and internships that I was not aware of before joining Honors College. I am currently doing an honors contract in one of my classes and throughout this honors contract I have been able to communicate with my professor and learn more about the class than what is taught throughout the semester. Overall, Honors College has helped prepare me for my future in health sciences and medicine through the extensive opportunities and resources that are available to me as a student at Indiana University.
