My name is Manreet Saggu and I am currently a sophomore at Indiana University Indianapolis (IUI). I am studying health sciences to purse my passion of becoming a radiologist and helping others. I am also Punjabi, both of my parents were born in India, so I am hoping to become the first doctor in my family.
I enjoy many different hobbies and I love trying new things. My favourite sport is soccer, I've been playing it my whole life. I am also Indian and I can speak Punjabi; I am also joining Punjabi Cultural Union (PCU) at IUI. I love to cook and bake, I find it very relaxing, especially when the dish I make taste phenomenal. I would say I am a goal driven person but I do procrastinate a lot, which is something I work on everyday. I give my 100% everyday and I'm very thankful for all the opportunities I've been given at IUI so far.
I am a kind person and I get this trait from my grandma. She has always taught me to be kind to everyone because you never know what someone is going through. She has taught me to always smile at everyone and lend a helping hand to anyone that is struggling. I am also a great listener, I love helping others. I get this trait from both my mother and my grandma because they always give to others and it has influenced me to give to others, not for the benefit of yourself, but to bring a smile to someone else face.
I am at IUI because I want to pursue my passion in Radiology and become a radiologist. This job requires a lot of work and many challenges but I know I can do it and I will not stop until I reach my goal. Radiologists diagnose and treat patients so I think this would be a great job for me because I love learning about the body and I love helping people.

This picture is me after I gave my affirmative action speech for AP Language and Composition. This speech is the reason I am tied closely with my culture and want to educate others on my culture as well.
This is important because this speech was mainly focused on equality and minority status in the private workplace. I love to talk about equality, being a minority myself, I feel that if I educate others about my culture, they will not be quick to judge anyone. Knowing about other cultures is great overall because we are all equal no matter what race or color our skin is.
This shows that I am passionate about educating others and I enjoy public speaking. This shows my growth because I never liked public speaking, but after this day I loved it; especially when I am talking about something I am passionate about, such as equality.
This is me and my mom in my cultural clothes after I performed a dance called gidha. Gidha is a form of Punjabi dance that is typically danced at weddings or for fun with a group of friends.
This artifact is important because it brought me closer to my religion and it made me realize how blessed I am to be apart of such a beautiful culture. When I was younger I never paid too much attention to my roots and would often get teased for the way I look. Now I have realized that my culture is beautiful and I educate others on it so no one will have to go through the discrimination I went through.
This shows that I am tied closely to my roots and I make an effort to learn about my culture anytime I can. Sikhism has been around for about 500 years, it is a relatively young practice. However, it is full of great teachings and beautiful traditions that I am thankful and proud to carry on. This shows my growth because I have learned so much about my culture and I pass my knowledge on to others that want to learn more about it as well.
