My name is Manreet Saggu, and I am a junior majoring in Health Sciences and on the Pre-med track. I chose Health Sciences and Pre medicine because I am passionate about helping people and making them feel better. I have always wanted to work in the hospital to pursue my passion, and work as a radiologist to benefit others lives.

After working at LHSI, I have realized that I like to do more hands on work rather than computer work. Other options I would like to explore are doing lab work since this requires more hands on work. I also enjoy being around others and having productive conversations about the work I know how to do very well. My time at LEADS has confirmed that I want to continue on to medical school and work in the hospital. I want to continue going to medical school and work in the hospital because I enjoy the intense work environment and I enjoy staying busy all of the time. My time at LEADS has also made me realize that I enjoy talking to patients. I am given the opportunity to shadow the physicians at my site so seeing how they do check ups and getting to talk to the patients afterwards is very intriguing to me. I feel very confident in using my self knowledge and preferences to making career decisions now. I am very grateful that this opportunity was given to me and many people I have talked to have influenced my journey to go to medical school.
Some goals I had at the beginning of the year were, I wanted to do hands on work, making meaningful contributions to a bigger project, and expand my network. I think I have made progress in all of these categories throughout the year of working at the internship site. I do hands on work everyday by making binders and labeling blood kits. I contribute to the project by doing QC and other tasks around the internship site. I have also expanded my network because I talk to a lot of different people at my internship site. Since it is a bigger site I get to see new faces every time I go.
In the summer I am planning on getting a job as a patient care tech so I have clinical hours and experience alongside doctors. I have not worked in a hospital setting yet to take care of patients so I believe an opportunity like this will shape me for medical school. Along side getting my patient care tech certificate, I will be volunteering at the hospital to get my volunteering hours and be in a hospital setting. When the fall semester starts I also plan to get a research position at a lab on campus because I have not done lab work in my undergraduate year yet. My internship has impacted my plans and goals because I have realized I enjoy doing more hands on work rather than working in the office, and I think medical school and being a patient care tech will fulfill this as I will be assessing patients and talking with them regularly.
