FRIDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 2025
Congratulations to all of the Year 3 children who took part in this week's swim meet. It was great to watch you all and see how fast you all were in the pool!
In English, we have been reading the Stone Trolls text to understand the structure of a 'tale of change'. We have been analysing how this is written and have started to think about our own stories of change. All classes performed their retelling of the Stone Trolls on our stage and to another Year 3 class. This was a great chance for them to practise being confident and clear in front of an audience. Something we are focusing on this year is to develop their public speaking skills.
In Maths, we are learning how to use known number bonds and facts to help us with our addition and subtraction calculations. Together, with our place value knowledge, we have been adding and subtracting numbers and tackling word problems.
In Science, we put our Palaeontologist hats on and became fossil hunters, learning about the process that makes fossils and how this relates to our Rocks unit.
In Humanities, we are learning how to create our very first video logs at school in the role of migrants. Our students are in groups where they have brainstormed their push and pull reasons for leaving their origin country and are going to take on these roles to document their 'journeys' in a 'vlog' format.
In Art & Design, we explored how the colour wheel is used within famous works of art. Our Year 3 students continue to amaze us with their artistic knowledge and ability to use 'the language of art' to describe the elements of their artwork. We then painted some incredible colour wheels of our own.
We hope to see you all at the PTA Summer Fair tomorrow, you might even spot some teachers in the Sponge the Teacher!

Congratulations to :
3CW: Aleeia - showing excellence in ALL her English writing tasks and displaying courage by applying for a leadership role, confidently delivering her speech in front of the class.
3SB: Rayun - for being a critical thinker. Thinking about what you are learning, asking questions to explore topics more deeply.

FRIDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER 2025
Although it has been a short week, we have managed a lot of learning in Year 3.
In English, we have been using our model text to inspire our retelling. Each class performed their retell of the Stone Trolls to another class this week. It was great to see the confidence our Year 3s are developing in speaking and listening. We also wrote poems using the rainforest as inspiration.
In Maths, we have completed our place value unit and are now moving onto addition and subtraction.
In Science, we explored igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and discovered the areas in Malaysia where we could source each of these.
In Humanities, we learnt about the push and pull factors of why people travel from place to place. We read a story called My Two Blankets that showed the challenges and positives of moving to a new country.
In Art & Design, we learnt more about Colour Theory, what primary, secondary and tertiary colours are and how they are made. Our students are developing some excellent colour knowledge in this unit and showing improvement in their painting skills.
Congratulations to all of our children who put themselves forward for our school leadership roles. Our candidates were announced yesterday, and the whole Year 3 team are very proud of the confidence and genuine happiness our students showed towards each other during these selections.

FRIDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER 2025
Another fabulous week in Year 3! A huge thank you to all of our students who bravely spoke in front of their classes to deliver their leadership speeches. We had such a huge number in each class apply for these roles and were very impressed by the time taken to write them and the quality on show.
In English, we have been working on our storyteller's voice, and how to use expression, actions and the vocabulary from the story to help us retell 'The Stone Trolls'. Through story mapping, we have discovered descriptive language to use in our own short pieces of writing.
In Maths, in our final week of place value for this unit, we have been using our knowledge of the value of each number to calculate 1, 10 and 100 more and less. We have been ordering these numbers on number lines and using our skills to work out missing numbers.
In Science, we are in full swing with our Rocks unit and are learning about how to carry out a fair test. We discovered which rocks are permeable and impermeable, and how we can plan an investigation with 'variables' and what we 'observed'.
In Humanities, we explored how humans have stayed connected throughout history. What was a telegraph and why was it used? How could we group these ways of being connected into groups? The children used their critical thinking skills to discuss and explain their reasons. We were so impressed with their reasoning and use of historical language!
In Art & Design, we continued learning different watercolour techniques. The children have been building up their art workbooks with their work samples, and we look forward to seeing this evolve into works of art towards the end of the term.

THURSDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER 2025
Although it has been a short week, Year 3 has been a hive of activity.
Thank you to all parents for joining us for PTCs this week. It was great to be able to meet you all in person and share how well your children have settled into the start of the Year.
In English, we were lucky to experience Mr Matt's retelling of The Stone Trolls. Please ask your child to retell this to you. It is such a fabulous story, with ambitious vocabulary that the children will be learning and using in their own writing soon! We have a wonderful year group of aspiring actors (including some of our teachers!), and it has been great to see this story come to life.
In Maths, we have continued with our understanding of place value and discovered the possibilities when changing these values. What numbers can be created if we move our Hundreds? Tens? or Ones?
In Science, our Rocks topic is in full swing. We are becoming excellent observers of materials (rocks) and can use our scientific vocabulary to describe them.
In Humanities, our 'Quest' unit continues with exploring how goods were transported from Asia to Europe. Our students are excellent investigators and have been using Google Earth to discover different terrains and answer questions such as: What transport would you use to get there? Would this transport change? What is the weather like in the countries you are going to? Would this impact your choices?
In Art & Design, we began learning the techniques of watercolour painting and their different effects. We learnt about the techniques 'wet on wet' and 'wet on dry'. The children then chose which technique they liked the most and were able to explain why using their artistic vocabulary.
As always, it has been a joy watching our Year 3 students soak up the many learning and social opportunities they have here at ISP.

FRIDAY 29TH AUGUST 2025
Our Year 3 students have continued their enthusiasm from week 1 into week 2 with a strong start to all of our units.
In English, we took inspiration from a stormy sea picture to generate exciting vocabulary to use in our own setting descriptions. Thank you to Ms Laetitia for planning a well-received and extremely fun drama lesson. Our Year 3's really know how to express their emotions and show what it was like to be on the stormy seas!
In Maths, we have begun our place value unit. What is the value of our ones, tens and hundreds and how can we use this knowledge and understanding to help us with addition? The students were very excited to point out Mr Scotty's 'mistakes' in his 'How to present our work in books' lesson and were great at offering solutions to make it more presentable. We hope this carries through in our students' own workbooks!
In Science, our classes have started our Rocks unit. Learning about the properties of materials and having this language developed has helped them in their own rock investigations. Describing the properties of rocks and where they might find the different types.
In Humanities, our Quest unit has explored where we come from in the world and the journeys it our families took to get here. We ended the week with a great 'trading' lesson where they discovered the very beginnings of trading and how it was one of the first ways of connecting global communities. We have some very strong and convincing 'traders' in Year 3.
In Art & Design we learnt all about colour theory, how and why artists chose the colours they did and how it makes us, as the viewers, feel about them. There were some very interesting student responses to the artwork. Please ask your child about this, as they were fantastic 'gallery walkers' and we enjoyed their expressive discussions.
A huge thank you to parents for your continued support for your child's first few weeks back at school. Year 3 is an exciting year, and the teachers have been buzzing at the end of each day when sharing their students' successes.
