FRIDAY 3RD OCTOBER 2025
What a successful week we have had in Year 1 with so much learning taking place.
In English this week, we continued to use the story Billy and The Beast as inspiration for our writing. We revised our learning about how to write a list and then we used our imaginations in Drawing Club to make a list of things that Billy might keep in her hair. She has all sorts of weird and wonderful items in there such as doughnuts, masks and a sparkly feather duster! After that, we focused on the ending when Billy and the animals trapped the Beast in a pot and rolled him down the hill. We came up with some very creative ways of how we would remove the Beast from the forest - bouncing him off a trampoline, catapulting him to another country or putting him in a rocket and blasting him into space!
In Maths, our lesson have focused on the language we use when comparing quantities. We've been using the words 'more' and 'fewer', as well as 'greater than', 'less than' and 'equal to'. We had a teddy bear's picnic to talk about whether we have enough food or not enough for each bear to have a treat. We played a dice game to see whose dice had more spots and whose had fewer. And finally, we met some greedy crocodiles who helped us to learn the symbols used for 'greater than', 'less than' and 'equal to'.
Our IPC lessons have had a Geography focus this week. We have been learning the names of the seven continents with a little bit of help from this very catchy song! We related this new learning to our own experiences by talking about which continent our home countries are on. After that, we took a look at the globe and an atlas to try to locate our home countries and continents.
Wishing you a lovely weekend ahead.

ENGLISH
Fiction - What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson. We will be learning to write simple sentences including using a capital letter at the beginning, a full stop at the end and finger spaces to separate the words inspired by this great fun text.
MATHS
Place Value - As we come towards the end of our unit on Place Value, we will be consolidating our understanding of comparing quantities and numbers using the greater than >, less than < and equals = symbols. We will order numbers from greatest to smallest and vice versa as well as learning about the number line.
IPC
This is me! - Geography. We will be learning more about where we live, first learning more about the beautiful country of Malaysia and then taking a look at some of the key features of its capital city - Kuala Lumpur. There will be lots of opportunities for the children to talk about places they have visited in Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur so you may wish to talk about it over the weekend.
DIGITAL SKILLS
Digital Citizenship - we will be learning about how to recognise which apps and websites are appropriate for our age group and which are not. We will talk about what to do if we see something that scares or upsets us online.
WEEKLY:
Each week your child will bring 2 books to practise reading at home. Books will be changed at school once per week. Please see below for your child’s book change day. Please try to listen to your child read each day and comment or sign in the reading record. Those who practise daily tend to make the best progress. Your child should keep the reading books in their school bag every day so that they can also read the same books with their teachers.
1AB, 1TL, 1GV & 1JK - Reading books will be collected on Monday and new books will be sent home on Tuesday.
1SL - Reading books will be collected on Wednesday and new books will be sent home on Thursday.
1RP - Reading books will be collected on Thursday and new books will be sent home on Friday.
We will only be able to change books on the days specified above. Please make sure books are returned to school on the day set for your child’s class.
