How about asking the students
A true learning focussed environment should be a space of possibilities. Try these checklist questions on the learning environments you use.
Does this learning space reflect the school’s philosophy of learning?
Does this learning space facilitate opportunities for collaborative learning?
Does this learning space accommodate for the differing needs of our learners?
How does this learning space stimulate and facilitate learning?
Does this space change and evolve to meet the needs of the learning?
Do the learners get to decide how to best set up the space for the specific learning?
Is this a place that invites curiosity, risk taking, wonder and ambition?
Are the key values of our school reflected through this learning environment?
How about asking the students:
What do we need to have in this space to help us as learners?
What could we do without?
What furniture arrangement would best suit you as a learner?
How can we make this a space we want to learn in?
How do we want to feel in here?
What parts of this space should be shared?
What parts should be personal?
How can we create pockets for quiet, small group and whole group learning?
How can we make our learning space look and feel special and inviting?
What responsibilities come with being here?
