PMBOK guide是由Project Management Institute (PMI)出版,1996出版第一版,每四年改版一次,PMBOK guide第六版於2017年底正式出版 (詳參:何謂PMBOK?、 何謂pm? 何謂pmp? 何謂pmi? 何謂pmbok? 何謂pdu?、Project Management Body of Knowledge)
PMBOK第七版 (2021發表)有很大的改變,將知識領域改為專案績效領域,並提供裁適以及模型、方法及工件等內容。

PMBOK guide 第五版包括5個流程群組(process group)及10個知識領域(knowledge area),流程群組是依專案進行的過程來分類,知識領域則是依主題分類,所以,每個流程群組會有多個知識領域裡的流程,每個知識領域也會跨流程群組。
