Through a treaty accepted by Queen Victoria, Canada became an independent self-governing federation in 1867. The Dominion of Canada was born on the 1st of July, 1867 thanks to the British North America Act and until 1982, it was celebrated as “Dominion Day” to commemorate the day Canada became a self-governing Dominion. Today is known as Canada Day.

Canada has been home to people for thousands of years and was first colonized by Europeans in the 16th century. However, it took over 400 years from European exploration to become an independent nation.
