Nid oes unrhyw amheuaeth mai oherwydd ei phont crog enwog a adeiladwyd ym 1826 mewn ardal o brydferthwch rhyfeddol ar lannau’r Fenai, y mae Porthaethwy fwyaf cyfarwydd.
Dros y degawdau bu’n ffocws atyniad i ymwelwyr a theithwyr ac mae ei safle cyfleus i drefi cyfagos wedi sicrhau mai tref breswyl boblogaidd yw hi erbyn heddiw. Yn wir mae ei phoblogaeth erbyn heddiw wedi cynyddu i dros 3,000.
Er y gwelwyd trai ar y teithio morwrol a hwyliai ar y Fenai, fe sefydlwyd Canolfan Astudiaethau Mor Prifysgol Cymru Bangor yma, ac mae’r dref yn parhau ei gafael ar arferion diwylliannol ac hanesyddol.
Gyda Chulfor Menai ar ei glannau, mynyddoedd mawreddog Eryri yn y cefndir a chysylltiadau teithio cyfleus i drefi Gogledd Cymru, yn sicr gellid ystyried tref Porthaethwy fel mynedfa i Ynys Mon
There is no doubt that because of its famous suspension bridge, built in 1926 in an area of astounding natural beauty on the shores of the Menai Straits, that Menai Bridge is most renowned.
Over the past decades the town became a focal point for tourists and travellers and its convenient location to nearby towns ensured that it became a popular residential area. Indeed its present population has risen to 3,000.
Despite the reduction in the maritime use along the Straits, the University of Wales, Bangor's School of Ocean Sciences is established here and the town continues to uphold many historical and cultural events.
With the Menai Straits along its shoreline, the majestic mountains of Snowdownia as a backdrop and its convenient travel connections to the towns of North Wales, certainly Menai Bridge can be considered as the gateway to Anglesey.
