Background Information
The Preseli hills are not high - 536 meters at their highest - but, this is an area full of drama. These heaths, moors and grassland are habitats for all sorts of plants and insects, including some that are quite rare. On a clear day you get a 360 degree view all the way to Snowdonia and over the sea to Ireland. The Golden Road is the backbone of the Preseli Hills. This 8 mile route is said to date from the Neolithic period - 5000 years ago. This was the main route between Britain and Ireland in the past. Prehistoric remains dot the hills, Bronze Age dolmens and Iron Age forts. From the top of Foel Drygarn you can see the remains of the stone walls and ditches that surrounded the summit keeping company with the surrounding natural cliffs and cliffs.
Although this area is sparsely populated, there are large and small villages full of character. Located in Pontfaen, in the Gwaun Valley, is the famous Dyffryn Arms pub. This is the area where the Old New Year's tradition is held every January 13th. There is a history of the slate industry in the Rosebush, Maenclochog and Llangolman area. Crymych is the center for a large agricultural area where the Welsh language and sports such as rugby and cricket play an important role in the life of society. In the Mabinogion legends, the Preseli is a landscape for the history of the Twrch Trwyth. In the legend of the sons of Owen there is an attempt to explain how the giant rocks above Allt Ty Canol, Carnedd Meibion Owen, were created. In this area many of the county's rivers abound and the lakes of Llysyfran and Rosebush are important for water provision.
While in Pembrokeshire we are of course very fond of the Preselis, other areas of Wales have bigger mountains. Sir Edumnd Hilary came to Snowdonia to practice for his expedition to the summit of Everest in 1953. Did you know that a Welshman named Everest? Tori James, from Haverfordwest, is among the women who have managed to climb to the summit. There are many myths about Cadair Idris, Cnicht and Moel Famau. Learning about the Brecon Beacons, Pumlumon, the Glyders and the Clwydian Range is all about explaining why our country is called 'mountain'.
Welsh people have been very prominent in the history of mountain climbing in the world. Lowri Morgan is among those who have ventured into the footsteps of the brave climber Eric Jones of Tremadog, who has conquered the highest peaks of the world. Ioan Doyle is another.
