The 10 communicative goals from the 'Continwwm' are revisited regularly to reinforce prior knowledge and expand learners' language skills.
In the learning journey example below, learners study one communicative function per half term, covering six functions each year from years 3 to 6. The graphic below shows which functions have been grouped. This approach ensures that all learners are focused on the same communicative function at the same time during the school year. Teachers must integrate the 'giving commands' function into health and well-being activities, while the 'discussing texts' function is embedded in reading sessions.
The units for the year are:
Describing and Identifying Myself
Describing and Identifying Others
Giving Opinion
Describing places, location and things
Customer Service
Discussing plans (past, present and future)
Each of the functions has sub-functions - the constructions that will be used. These sub-functions should be introduced in sentence builders. It is suggested that teachers follow a set of guiding principles in planned activities and approaches until learners can use the functions spontaneously.
