In the village of St. Dogmaels, on the northern border of our county, stands an old abbey, workhouse and school - all symbolizing old authoritarian systems. Until the end of the Victorian era, very strict systems of law, order and education existed in Pembrokeshire. They can be seen in the buildings that dot our county today. If the walls of St Dogmaels Abbey, Haverfordwest Priory, Nevern Castle, Narberth and Pembroke Workhouses, Haverfordwest Gaol, and all the County's old schools could speak, they would tell an interesting story.

Merched Beca (Rebecca's Ladies) first committed crime in Efailwen, in May 1839. It was a protest against the increase in tollgates and the level of tolls on the roads of the area. The protesters wore women's clothing with blacked faces. The first protests were a success, and so they spread across west Wales. The 'Ladies' leader at Efailwen was Thomas Rees, or "Twm Carnabwth". Did the 'Ladies' break a gate in your area?
Many old buildings in each community have been adapted for a new purpose over the centuries. Is it important that we protect them? Can we use them to interpret history for the future of Pembrokeshire, or for visitors? How can historic buildings play an important role in our County's economy?
