"I've learned that I still have a lot to learn."

Maya Angelou

The ‘Principles for Excellence’ online professional development programme has been written to support teachers in Wales with their professional learning in these unprecedented times.

“As important as it is for teachers to remain connected with their students, the crisis will amplify the need for teachers to remain connected among themselves.”

Andreas Schleicher, Director for Education and Skills at the OECD (23 March 2020)

'Principles for Excellence' seeks to encourage teachers to stay connected to colleagues in their own and in other schools, while working from home. The PfE allows staff to explore a principle of pedagogy together, reflect on the underlying research and consider how the knowledge gained could be used within your classroom.

"The 'Principles for Excellence' programme meets many of the criteria of effective CPD."

Cordingley et al. (2015)

CPD should be:

  • sustained over a longer period of time (at least two terms)

  • include regular meetings (fortnightly to monthly)

  • consist of sessions that are tailored to teachers’ needs

  • involve peer learning

  • explicitly discuss the translation of research to the classroom

  • allow teachers time to implement what they have learned

  • discuss impact of implementing new/adapted practice with colleagues.
