This section of the website gives you a taste of how to plan dedicated routes for learners to develop their Welsh speaking and listening skills. The structure follows 4 main steps in order to foster independent speakers, and they are based on best practice language learning pedagogy, as well as recent prominent methods, such as the MARS-EARS framework developed by Dr Gianfranco Conti. The steps also support the 12 Principles of Curriculum for Wales Pedagogy.
This process is not a race! Planning and providing suitable and consistent opportunities for learners to practise at each stage will bear much better fruit, than trying to rush from one stage to the next. Take things steadily! It is a step by step process.
STEP 1 MODELLING
An opportunity for the learners to hear and repeat the pattern, show WHAT to say and HOW to say it. We usually model by drilling.
STEP 2 STRUCTURED PRACTISE
An opportunity for the learners to use the language now with support. 'Help' can take many different forms as you can see here.
STEP 3 USING AND PRODUCING
Purposeful opportunities for the learners to practise using the patterns they have learned. It is important that they have done Steps 1 and 2 with the patterns before being able to successfully carry out Step 3 activities.
STEP 4 USING THE LANGUAGE SPONTANEOUSLY
An opportunity for learners to use the language spontaneously.
This website gives you a taste of the principles for introducing the Welsh language in the English medium sector, but if you want to develop your own Welsh skills or your ability to introduce the Welsh language to learners further, contact the relevant officer within the local team to support y Gymraeg/ the Welsh language.
