Robotics Jr Working Collaboratively

I recently started Robotics Jr. and HEROs Robotics clubs. My Robotics Jr. students were in charge of teaching ME how to use Dot and Dash. They thought I was not telling the truth when I said, "I hardly know anything about Dot and Dash! I am expecting you to teach me and others your findings!" The students were put into random groups and given a Dash robot, an iPad, and some floor space. We talked about teamwork, creating safe environments, and communication (between human to human as well as human to bots). I caught students going to another group in order to help them with certain app or robot solutions.

HEROs Robotics Working Collaboratively

HEROs Robotics is all about teamwork! In this student-centered activity, the teammates are learning to talk to one another clearly, agree and disagree correctly, and create the correct code for the "bot" to complete the challenge.

Hour of Code: Kindergarten-2nd Grade

Another student-centered activity I implemented in our technology lab at WCE this year was teaching kinder-2nd grade how to code Beebots. This allowed younger students to explore what it is like to give commands with basic coding and see their code come to life. At the end of the unit, we placed painter's tape on the floor that made 90-degree turns so the students had to create rectangles, squares or race down a zigzag path.
