Basics
Library books are cataloged under the library side with barcodes starting with "3".
Lit Sets and Novel Sets, which are multiple copies of the same title and used for the classroom, are cataloged under the resource side just like a textbook and use barcodes starting with "4". Lit sets are shelved in the textbook/resource room, and do not have spine labels.
We do not circulate of print magazines.
We do not purchase or circulate board books unless the school has a pre-school program.
Collection Organization
To make our libraries student friendly, we align our collections so students do not have to re-learn where the books are if they move to a new school or to the next level. Having consistent, district-wide bibliographical standards can help with this, and we can make students’, teachers, substitutes, and our own lives easier by thoughtfully planning how campus libraries are arranged. We collaboratively work across the district to establish shelving consistency within our library collections.
Tips:
Try to avoid creating special sections when possible - shelve like items together
Keep your shelving contiguous and consistent - for example, shelve Fiction A-Z, left to right, all together, with no breaks in between shelves. Shelve Nonfiction 000-999 left to right, all together, with no breaks between shelves.
