Shading

ACTIVITY:

Using Charcoal. Refer back to your contour line drawing of the styrofoam cups.

Add in the shadow areas of your drawing

use a finger/tissue or blending stump, blend out the shadow to form a gradation to the lighter areas. Use white charcoal if needed to bring some lighter areas back

you can add in a dark background and shadow on the table top.

Activity: skill development

lets start with looking at graphite pencils and value - watch the introduction to graphite video and complete some value scales in your visual diary using 2b 4b 6b pencils.

What to avoid when shading - watch the video..

Now to shade a sphere. This will be demonstrated to you in class - if you are away you can watch the video below and read through the slideshow

remember to KEEP IT LIGHT TILL ITS RIGHT!

no dark lines until it looks correct - if you need to erase your drawing too dark!

ACTIVITY: Shading skill development

  1. look through the document called life without outlines [how to shade without using lines]

  2. on a piece of paper draw or trace a circle with a diagonal line and a square around all this just like the image shown.

  3. start by copying the value scale above your sphere.

  4. using the grayscale sphere as reference shade in your circle using light circular strokes and building up layers to achieve values from black to white

  2. Pay attention to the negative space!

  3. erase lines if too dark before adding in the shading.

Watch the how to video for further guidance

Activity Paper Twist value drawing.

  2. Use a strip of paper and some tape to make your paper twist sculpture

  3. complete a detailed shaded drawing of your sculpture

REMEMBER: no rainbow shading, no hairy outlines, mo messay shading, no smudging [watch the what not to do video on the value section if you've forgotten!]

Extension - Draw like Ed Ruscha. Using a strip of paper, bend it into a word or your name. photograph it in strong lighting and then render it into a greyscale drawing
