LINE continuous Bird Drawing

focus study: Continuous Bird drawings

Part 1 - Use a large sheet of paper to complete a series of continuous line drawings of birds

  • Start with blind [look at subject only] continuous drawings of about 90 seconds each and then move to modified contour [looking at both paper and subject].

  • these drawings should be at least the size of your hand and do not worry if they overlap - fill the entire page with drawings

Part 2- Use an A4 viewfinder to select a part of your larger sheet that is an interesting composition.

  • Redraw this to A3 paper [wet strength].

  • Use this time to strengthen some lines to create visual interest.

  • You may also add in details you may have missed BUT keep it as continuous line!

Part 3 - use indian ink to add washes of greys to the birds. Think about where shadows would be

  • Use mid to light grey inside the bird and mid to dark for background

Part 4 - Use colour dye/watercolor to add blocks of colour to individual shapes created by the continuous line

  • think about warm/cool colours and complementary colours. Apply the colour OVER THE TOP of the greyscale of the indian ink... don't try to "fill in the gaps"

Part 5 - Go over your lines with Indian ink and a skewer- keep the lines continuous and loose
