PREPARING YOUR PAINTING SURFACE

  1. you need to prepare your painting surface with two coats of gesso

  2. use a nuetral cool grey or raw sienna as a base colour. Apply a thin colour wash using a damp cloth and small amount of paint

  3. use carbon paper to transfer your portrait the painting surface. only include basic outlines, no value shading or fine details

  4. follow the instructions below to create a chance composition which you will use as the "cubist" pattern over the portrait.

  5. Use carbon paper to transfer your selection over teh top of your portrait outline

Colour Scheme

you will be using a TRIADIC colour scheme to paint your portrait.

  • select your favourite TERTIARY colour and then make a triadic scheme with the other two colours spaced equally around the colour wheel.

  • You can use tints and shades of those three colours

Chance composition

  1. Design cubist painting using portrait and chance composition

2. lay in dark areas with black and some block areas of colour

3. use tints and shades of your triadic colour scheme to paint in each shape in the design. ensure you have a balance of colours across the work. Pehaps have one Hue in the background and the other two for the face

4. use a paint knife drag some textured areas and build up value

5. add details such as the eye highlight, pattern to sections.

Emphasise the lines by going over them with paint, pencil or indian ink.

Extend some of the lines into other shapes

Use a white pencil to add white "slashes" to areas for emphasis and interest
