Photopea

Getting the hang of it...

really, the best way to do this is to watch a couple of video tutorials and give it a go and then play around...

Watch the video Photopea for beginners. download the images below to follow along the tutorial [not same photos as video]

Lets try playing around with a bit more detail and layering our first Surrealist composition

Download the images for the tutorial first

FOCUS TASK - Humanimal Digital Collage

By now you should be familiar with most of the basic tools within Photopea.

Your first focus task is to create a humanimal. I have created a video tutorial on how I put one together which you should watch first below.

All the images that you require are in our shared google drive. The best way to access this is to install google drive file stream [click on link to learn more] or you can download the files you want to use for your creature [i don't recommend downloading all the files - there is a lot of them!]

Once you have your parts selected, start to build your creature in Photopea [yes you can use Photoshop if you have access and are able to use it effectively]

EXTENSION - use the text tool to add your creatures name! use the chance naming sheet here

Save your finished creature as YourName.jpg and turn in on classroom

FOCUS TASK digital collaged "scape"

  1. refer to Howards examples above as well as the previous artists we explored in the introduction of the unit [both modern and contemporary artists as well as the collage artists we looked at.. Go back to THIS PAGE for a refresher [links to artists are both towards the top and collage artists after the surrealist games.

  2. SKetch some ideas for your scape after looking at the source images in our shared drive. Focus on juxtaposition, repetition, size and contrast

    • A scape can be a landscape, a cityscape, inside a room scape, a seascape, a moonscape - you get the idea?

here are some things to consider in your design

    • something flying, something melting, something near and far [big and small], something that recedes to a vanishing point, something inside something else, something coming out of something else.

    • make sure you have depth and overlapping.

  1. Open up photopea [or photoshop] and start to add in the selected images cut and transform as you need to to make it a cohesive work of art

*remember to save as .PSD if not complete and lastly save as both a .psd & .jpg

EXTENSION TASKS

  1. If you have downloaded your humanimal collage as a .psd file. Open it and then create an environment for your creature to live in. Try and make this piece appear as a cohesive finished artwork - not just your humanimal stuck in a landscape...

  2. refer back to some of the pop collage artists we looked at when first learning about surrealism, Create your own original collage composition. You can use any of the images I have provided for you or search for your own on the internet. I suggest websites such as unsplash.com, maxpixels and pexels.com for free non copyrighted work.
