FOCUS TASK: VALUE DRAWING Pepeke [4-6 lessons A4]
Select a pepeke portrait from the resource folder to redraw with graphite pencil as realistically as possible like Natalie McIntyre. You will be shown how to transfer your design to your paper and ways to work from dark to light and erase texture and details.
In the background you will add a kowhaiwhai pattern from a stencil or freehand. This will need to be rendered to show light and dark values as well to match your bird drawing.
Natalie McIntyre’s work is mainly concerned with the symbolic and aesthetic value of insects. She is inspired by their limitless diversity in terms of their shape, colour and texture, studying their physiognomy at close range and making them appear both monstrous and beautiful.She graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art with an MFA in Fine Art Media in 1999 and this is where her fascination with insects began, documenting them through photography and printmaking.
