Part 1 - Complete a series of continuous line drawings of birds.
Start with blind [look at subject only] continuous drawings of about 90 seconds each and then move to modified contour [looking at both paper and subject].
These drawings should be at least the size of your hand and do not worry if they overlap - fill the entire page with line drawings
Part 2- Select a part of your sheet that is an interesting composition.
Redraw this to A4 paper [wet strength].
Use this time to strengthen some lines to create visual interest.
You may also add in details you may have missed BUT keep it as continuous line!
Part 3 - use indian ink to add washes of greys to the birds where shadows would be.
Use mid to light grey inside the bird and mid to dark for the background
Part 4 - Use colour dye/watercolor to add blocks of colour to individual shapes created by the continuous line [wet on wet to allow colour bleed within the birds]
Think about warm/cool colours and complementary colours. Apply the colour OVER THE TOP of the greyscale of the Indian ink... don't try to "fill in the gaps"
Part 5 - add details back in
add white around eyes and a highlight in them
add texture to any branches etc
Go over your lines with ink and skewer- keep the lines continuous and loose
