Value is the lightness or darkness of a colour. High value is light [white being highest] and low value is dark [black being lowest]. Using different values creates contrast which helps the viewer see and understand the image. Value makes shapes appear 3D and creates form.
Watch this video on an introduction to graphite pencils
Watch my tutorial on doing a value gradation scale and complete a value scale in your Visual diary showing a smooth shading gradation {top} and smooth steps of a value scale {bottom part of image}.
NO FINGER SMUDGING!!! USE YOUR PENCIL TO BLEND
The next few activities will be asking you to shade to add value. Its important to understand what NOT to do, to ensure quality work. Watch this video and ensure that you keep these DONT Do's in mind while shading
watch each video below and then do the activity in your sketchbook
select a simple leaf shape and draw this 3 times on your page [fill the space]. Draw in the main vein and stem. Using straight or curved lines, "fracture" your page and leaves. each fractured space needs to be shaded as a gradation scale, abut you still need to manage to define the leaf shape!
Select an autumn leaf to draw [or use a photograph] render your leaf using graphite pencil.
begin to draw a light contour line of your leaf
define the main veins of your leaf and stem
look carefully at the range of values in your leaf and start to shade in your drawing to match them.
DO NOT focus on the small details of small veins - focus on the overall shape, shadows and main veins and stem.
