Shapes can be categorized into three types
Organic or abstract [looks like things from nature]
Geometric [triangles, squares etc]
Symbolic [recycling, medical, hearts]
Shapes occur
•naturally [trees etc] or
•Man made [buildings/structures]
Positive shapes occupy positive space. The area around positive shapes, the background, is negative space.
Positive. Term to describe the figure or subject.
Negative. Term to describe the background [ground]
What is the difference between open shape and closed shape?
A closed shape is a fully enclosed shape.
An open shape is technically a line which doesn't meet up [close] but we still see it as a shape, or it separates a space into sections perceived as shapes

You will explore ink and pastel resist techniques and then turn this into a Mark Heard inspired bird. Previous techniques of mark making will be incorporated into this task;
Select your bird template and transfer it to your background and cut out. You will need to use left over pieces of background and possibly add in colour to attach to the inside of your wing when you fold it down. attach a hanger before you fold and glue together [use some string]
use paint markers, pens and Indian ink to add details like feathers etc
Eyes - these can be painted on, or use googly eyes. You could also use collage or sticky dots
Nōtan is a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark elements as they are placed next to the other in the composition of art and imagery. It uses positive and negative space to create a strong contrasting composition
Using your newly developed skills in google drawing, you will create a digital version of a Notan. Use a Silhouette of your chosen Manu in your design!
