Advanced Placement
The Advanced Placement program is a nationally recognized program sponsored by The College Board which enables students to complete college level studies while still in high school and to obtain college placement credit on the basis of their performance on rigorous Advanced Placement examinations. Participation in Advanced Placement programs is often used as one of the criteria for academic scholarship and acceptance into many highly selective colleges. Advanced Placement courses are offered across the curriculum and students can choose specific areas of interest in which to challenge themselves.
Advanced Placement Courses carry an examination fee for students to potentially obtain college credit, and some AP courses also carry a lab or material fee. Any student enrolled in an AP class will be required to take the AP exam in May of that year. AP courses carry an additional grade weight of +1.00 quality point. Requests to drop an AP class if a student is failing may be considered on an individual basis, based on teacher recommendation and administrator approval. However, changes are not guaranteed.
AP Capstone Diploma Program
Hoover High School is one of one hundred schools across the world to offering students the opportunity to earn an AP Diploma in addition to the Alabama High School Diploma. The AP Capstone program equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges. AP Capstone is built on the foundation of a two-course high school sequence —AP Seminar (10th, 11th, or 12th grades) and AP Research (11th or 12th grade with a prerequisite of AP Seminar)— and is designed to complement and enhance the in-depth discipline-specific study provided through all of the AP courses.
Students who complete the AP Capstone courses and earn a score of 3 or higher on the corresponding AP examinations receive the AP Capstone Certificate. Students who earn scores of 3 or higher on both Capstone courses and on four additional AP exams of their choosing receive the AP Capstone Diploma.
