AP Seminar is a foundational course for the AP Capstone Diploma that engages students in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Using an inquiry framework, students practice reading and analyzing articles, research studies, and foundational, literary, and philosophical texts; listening to and viewing speeches, broadcasts, and personal accounts; and experiencing artistic works and performances. Students learn to synthesize information from multiple sources, develop their own perspectives in research-based written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as part of a team. Ultimately, the course aims to equip students with the power to analyze and evaluate information with accuracy and precision in order to craft and communicate evidence-based arguments. Students enrolling in this course are anticipating enrollment in English 11, Advanced Placement Language and Composition and English 12, Advanced Placement Literature and Composition.
Advanced Placement courses are rigorous, college-level courses. Students are required to take the end-of-course exam in May. See the Hoover City Schools fee schedule for exam fees.

Pre-IB English 10 is an American literature seminar in which students will read, discuss, and assess works published between the years of 1630 and the early 1950s. At the core of the course is the idea that American authors consistently write as a response to the time period in which they are writing, so students will be led to discuss the historical context of each work, as well as the societal issues the author intends to highlight and reform. The evaluation criteria will be based upon the IB language curriculum’s assessment rubrics.
Note: This course will differ significantly from English Advanced Level 10 (i.e. AP Seminar) in that Pre-IB English 10 is specifically and intentionally focused on literary analysis, so as to set students up for success in IB English Literature 11-12. Therefore, completion of Pre-IB English 10 is highly recommended for any student planning to enroll in IB English 11-12.
*Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the International Baccalaureate program, Pre-IB History 10 is a co-requisite for this course. Students will also be grouped with other Pre-IB students during CREW (homeroom) time.
