US History and Geography Since 1877 is a required two-semester course which investigates the major changes in American history from the end of Reconstruction through modern times. The class delves into political history, economic history, intellectual history, and explores the major figures and events after Reconstruction, including industrialization, the Gilded Age, Progressivism, American imperialism, World War I, the Roaring 20s, the Great Depression, the New Deal, World War II, the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam, and politics into modern times. The class places particular emphasis on looking at differing interpretations of what happened and why, in addition to supporting historical arguments with appropriate evidence and analysis.
This is a course that is offered virtually in addition to an in-person class. Students must complete the permission form and turn it in to their counselor. Teachers will communicate expectations regarding classwork and testing in the course syllabus.

The Advanced Placement Program in United States History, a college level course, is designed to provide students with the analytical skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the problems in United States History. Students will study American History chronologically and through the development of themes, and will evaluate the reliability and importance of historical documents. This course is the second half of a two-year program. Some summer work is required. Students who have not taken APUSH 10 will be entering into the middle of a two -year program. Students signing up for APUSH 11 who have not taken APUSH 10 must talk to Ms. Ford for books and summer work (including DBQ, LEQ, and SA practice assignments) before they leave in May.
Advanced Placement courses are rigorous, college-level courses. Students are required to take the end-of-course exam in May. See the Hoover City Schools fee schedule for exam fees.
IB HISTORY OF THE AMERICAS 11TH GRADE (+1.00 COURSE WEIGHT)

This course is the first part of a two-year International Baccalaureate curriculum that prepares students for higher-level (HL) assessments in the history of the American continent. The focus for year 1 is on U.S. history in the context of World history. Additionally, students research and analyze any historical event or concept of their choice through their Historical Investigation paper.
Students who are enrolled in IB History 11 and 12 are given a waiver from the state of Alabama graduation requirements and do not not have to take Government and Economics.

This is a semester course.
Economics is a required one-semester course which studies how scarce resources are allocated among unlimited wants, needs, and desires. The purpose of the course is to acquaint students with both microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts and to foster a better understanding of the world economy. Topics studied include basic economic concepts; economic systems and the role of the government in the economy; supply, demand, and equilibrium; measuring the standard of living; economic indicators such as Gross Domestic Product, inflation, and unemployment; the financial sector; stabilization policies; and international trade. This is a course that is offered virtually in addition to an in-person class. Students must complete the permission form and turn it in to their counselor. Teachers will communicate expectations regarding classwork and testing in the course syllabus. PLEASE NOTE: 12th Grade Students have priority in the master schedule- this course may not be available for 11th Grade students.

This is a semester course.
United States Government is a required one-semester course which examines, in depth, the constitutional powers delegated to the three branches of federal government as well as those powers reserved to the states. Particular attention is also given to individual civil rights as well as the responsibilities of citizenship. Other topics included in this course are: comparative political systems, a review of the foundations of the United States governmental system, the rise and importance of political parties, and politics in a democratic government.
