VISUAL ARTS I

In this course, students will be introduced to a wide range of two and three-dimensional art media and techniques. Some of the two-dimensional projects include drawing in graphite, ink, and colored pencil; oil pastels; and painting in watercolor and acrylics. Three-dimensional projects may include hand-built pottery or paper mache sculpture. Students will also learn about the elements of art and principles of design and a vocabulary of art terms. This intro-level course opens up the possibility to take a variety of other visual art classes offered in the future.
This is a course that is offered virtually in addition to an in-person class. Students must complete the permission form and turn it in to their counselor. Teachers will communicate expectations regarding classwork and testing in the course syllabus. Virtual Art 1 follows the same curriculum as the face-to-face Art 1 classes but is taught through video lessons and online activities. The students pick up supplies to keep at home to complete assignments by certain due dates. The students watch step-by-step videos and instructions for each art project. All information and communication for the course are through Google Classroom and email including lessons, assignments, and due dates. Students then submit their work through the website used for the lesson. Students can also ask questions and receive feedback through the website or email.
VISUAL ARTS II

The purpose of this course is to improve on the drawing and painting foundations that were learned in Art 1. The first semester is designed to further develop drawing skills using pencil, pen and ink. During the second semester, students will do an extensive study of color theory and painting. By the end of this course, students will be able to draw and paint from still-life as well as expounding on critical thinking in preparation for independent work for Art 3, Art 4 and beyond.

This course is designed for students who are serious about developing their artistic skills. The primary focus will be creating original artwork using a variety of 2-D media with an emphasis on working from observation and solving open-ended projects and problems. Some of the projects include but are not limited to working in pencil, charcoal, pastel, paint, printmaking, mixed media, and digital art (Procreate on iPads).

This course is for art students who have completed Art 3 and would like to continue working in two-dimensional media and develop their own style but do not want to take Art at the AP, college level. Every nine weeks, students will work on an independent study by developing a mini concentration of original work in a variety of media with an accompanying written artist statement. Art 4 students should have a strong work ethic and be willing to work at home, as well. Students will be able to prepare a portfolio for scholarships and college review but not have the demands and restrictions of the AP Studio course.

Course Video/Teacher Introduction
In the Ceramics classroom you will see works of art in progress, potters wheels, glazing tables, ceramic tool stations and other equipment and tools used for ceramic arts. As a part of the ceramics class you will be taught to create both functional and sculptural works of art. You will be taught to create these works using the pinch, coil, slab, and wheel methods. These works include serving vessels, wheel thrown dishes (cups, bowls), wall hanging and in the round sculptures, whistles , ceramic decals and much more. You will sometimes work in groups on larger projects. When you complete this course you will have a strong working knowledge of clay and its many functions as well as how to build and utilize its magnificent qualities.

Advanced Ceramics is an extension of the processes learned in Ceramics I. In addition to the hand building methods learned previously, the student will be exploring more advanced techniques on the potter’s wheel including functional wares such as plates, large bowls, vases, and drinking mugs. The student will also extend their hand-building skills with more advanced techniques for projects such as working water fountains, relief tiles, and busts, just to name a few. Advanced Ceramics will serve to further the student's knowledge of the many other avenues that can be traveled by the clay artist.
VISUAL ARTS, SCULPTURE II

This course is designed for students who wish to explore sculpture through a variety of media. This course will include projects involving paper, metal, wood, clay, glass and even light. Students will learn a variety of skills throughout this course that will benefit them in both future art endeavors as well as many workforce applications. Just a few areas that students will explore include but are not limited to hand-built clay sculptures, blacksmithing, and LED lighting. This course is designed for students who wish to explore sculpture in a variety of media. The class will include sculpting with sheet metal, bronze and aluminum, plaster and glass. Clay sculpture and pottery is also included, using hand building and wheel throwing techniques with high-fire earthenware. Students will also explore raku firing, and a variety of glaze application techniques.
VISUAL ARTS, SCULPTURE III

This one credit course, accomplished level, is the second of a sequential high school course focusing on the medium of sculpture. Sculpture III will further develop the skills learned in Sculpture II. Creating, presenting, responding, and connecting drive, critical thinking, meaning, reflection, production and assessment to understand how sculpture communicates ideas and allows for self-expression. Through continued exploration and experimentation, this course provides students with a comprehensive study in the sculpture studio processes, art criticism, aesthetics, and art history. Students will explore more elaborate and detailed methods of sculpting including but not limited to metal fabrication, metal casting, woodworking, clay, light, stop motion animation, concrete and digital sculpting. Students will respond to personal experiences and express ideas using a variety of traditional and contemporary sculpture processes, while effectively applying the elements of art and principles of design to provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of sculpture. Students serious about sculpture will be challenged to hone and demonstrate their skills through creative and thoughtful design, problem solving and presentation. Students will discuss their work through critiques and work towards developing works with meaning and intent. Safe practices and proper use of tools, equipment and materials are emphasized.

In this class students will learn about photography as a fine art. Objectives for the class include: the proper use of a camera, film developing, printing, the rules of good composition, and the history of photography. Students will become proficient in the use of digital cameras as well as professional photography studio equipment. This course includes a study of the elements of art and principles of design and the application of those elements to real-world problems. This course emphasizes the essential elements needed for learning basic dance styles and techniques. Students will also learn to relate music and movement through self-choreographed pieces. Dance I is not necessarily a prerequisite to Dance II although students with no or limited dance experience will want to pursue the more basic course before attempting the fast-paced, more challenging Dance II class. There will be three required performances each year (fall, winter, and spring). Marching Band can earn a PE or a Fine Arts credit.
Each musician will be expected to perform at a Grade 3 level of musicianship to participate in the band. Concert and Marching instruction is provided for each student. Band is divided into 2 or 3 class levels (depending on total enrollment) which is determined by audition prior to enrollment. Students must be in band both semesters. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required and graded. Marching band will provide musical and visual entertainment at all football games. In addition, students will participate in competitive events such as marching festivals and contests. Concert bands will perform winter and spring concerts and will participate in District and State assessment performances. Major areas of concentration are as follows: development of characteristic tone production, playing fundamentals, and marching fundamentals.

CONCERT CHOIR 12TH GRADE- MIXED CHORUS IV

In 12th grade advanced choirs singers continue to develop musical skills starting in the 9th and 10th Grade Concert Choirs. Although it is helpful for developing vocal musical skills, participation in 9th and 10th Grade Choir is not required for participation in the upper level choirs. This is a performance based elective that has a $40.00 elective fee and requires purchasing a uniform ($75.00 - only once in your career at Hoover High School). In these ensembles there is strong concentration on music fundamentals with continued development of ear training, sight reading, healthy vocal production, and music theory. Choral repertoire in these ensembles is more advanced and challenging. This is a performance based elective and there is a uniform purchase requirement. There are two major performances each year and these choirs participate in State Choral Performance Assessment. Students in these ensembles are also offered the opportunity to participate in Collegiate Honor Choirs in state and out of state colleges and universities. Many choral students from the HHS Choral Department are attending college/university on choir scholarships. They have received these scholarships based on their ability to sight read, their vocal tone quality and other musical skills learned and developed through participation in the HHS Choral Program. These students are majoring in disciplines other than music, but participate in choir. Many former choral students are on scholarship majoring in music.

Paradigm is a competitive, auditioned show choir. The men and women of Paradigm perform numerous times throughout the school year, travel throughout the southeast, and participate in multiple show choir competitions. Class time is spent preparing and singing competition show music and choreography. Extra rehearsals are held on occasional weekends. Additional expenses include costume rental, competition fees, choreography retreat, and a general show choir fee. The Show Choir class will include the Kinesiology curriculum and can count as a PE credit or a Fine Art or Elective credit. Fees include the $40 registration fee and fees, fund-raising, and donations for costuming and choreography.

THEATRE I

Theatre I is a basic introduction to the theatre. Emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of acting as well as the basics of play production such as lighting, sound, costuming, and set design. Activities include performing from published plays as well as improvisation and creative dramatics. The goal of Theatre I is to acquire an appreciation for the theatre as an actor, backstage participant, and audience member. Opportunities to participate in school play productions are available at all theatre levels.

Theatre II is a more in-depth investigation of the theatre. The students participate in local or state-wide theatre festivals. Past topics have included make-up, stage combat, dialects and Shakespeare.

Students will complete additional assessments based on the IB theatre requirements and develop their official IB theatre portfolio which includes the Research Presentation (which demonstrates the student’s understanding of a theatre tradition and the practical application of a convention), the Production Proposal (where the student plans out the performance and production elements of a chosen script), and the Collaborative Project (a 7-10 minute original piece created by the student and peers and performed in front of classmates).

AP Music Theory is designed to provide students with a learning experience equivalent to that of an introductory college course in music theory. The goal of this course is to develop the student's ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. This course will seek to instill mastery of the rudiments and terminology of music as well as the development of aural, written, compositional, analytical, and sight-singing skills. Among the rudiments of music to be mastered in this course are notation, scales, keys, modes, chords, Roman numeral analysis, metric organization, figured bass, part writing and much more. Music Theory is an AP class that is for both instrumentalists and vocalists. This course is strongly recommended for any student who is considering majoring or minoring in music and also for those who want a deeper understanding of the theoretical aspects of music. This course is taught in conjunction with a music performance class (band or choir). In this blended online course, students will not only analyze traditional composers such as Mozart and Beethoven, but will also get to explore different musical styles across the globe from Mongolian throat singing, Middle-Age chants, Native American lullabies, to genres like jazz and pop. All music is subject to investigation in this course, and students will compare and contrast the compositional elements behind two differing cultural genres. If you are interested in delving into your favorite classical works, iconic Broadway tunes, or even songs from the Beatles or Skrillex, this course is for you.
Note: Students who are not already a part of the IB program may take this course by approval of dance teacher and IB coordinator. Please complete this IB Fine Arts application.
