Teens Against Child Labor

Brody Cordon

I am a sophomore at Holliston High School. I play soccer for the Holliston varsity team with Bryan Tabe. We both were interested in the issue of child labor which is why we decided to base our project around it.

Community need

We both feel that people need to be more educated on the issue of child labor as it is a major worldwide issue that goes unseen. After doing even more research we learned that nearly 160 million children around the world are engaged in child labor.

Community Help

It's always important that you educate yourself about the issue of child labor and the factors that can lead up to it. People can also provide help by donating to local organizations that focus on the issue of child labor.

The Holliston Pantry Shelf has been helping people in need since 1993 and has been key to our project.

Project Goals

The goal of our project is to create a garden in the greenhouse at Holliston High School. We also want to be able to donate the plants to people in need because research has shown that the leading causes of child labor is poverty and child hunger.

Community Partner

Our community partner at the High School is the science teacher, Mr. Marsh. Mr. Marsh has been helping us along the way providing Bryan and I with space in the greenhouse as well as recommending plants that would be useful for our project. Our other Community partner is Christine Costa who is the produce manager at the Pantry Shelf. She let us donate our plants to the Pantry and she will continue to take care of them until people get them.

Project Progress

We originally started our garden by planting two spinach plants and two lettuce plants. We've since seeded additional varieties in our garden and we ended up with 20 total plants. These new plants consisted of squash, radish, carrot, as well as more lettuce and spinach. We were able to donate these plants to the Holliston Pantry Shelf so that people in need can continue to grow and produce food of their own.
