Deforestation

Community Need: Our project targets Deforestation, and how to prevent and reverse the effects deforestation has on our environment. Deforestation causes the emission of harmful greenhouse gases and can change the distribution of rainfall. Many forest areas in our community and globally are being cut down to build new houses, work buildings, stores, and recreational areas, which has a large contribution to global climate change

Project Goals: Our goal with this project is to plant several trees around the High School and our community. We are working with the Garden Club at Holliston High to plant these trees. We also hope to educate students, staff, and other members of our community on the effects of deforestation and how to prevent it.

Community Partnership: We are partnering with the Garden Club of Holliston and the DPW. We met with Sean Reese, Director of the Holliston DPW, and in our meeting, we talked about potential plans for planting trees around the town and the best option we came up with was attending the Arbor Day celebration

Arbor Day:  On Friday April 26th, we attended Arbor day on Green Street in Holliston, where Holliston planted 5 new trees and celebrated officially becoming a part of the Tree City USA community.  At Arbor day we were able to meet with Kathy Shore who is the leader of the Garden club in Holliston, and we were able to talk with her about our project

Significant Tree nomination

At Arbor Day, Kathy Shore introduced us to Sharon Thornton, and Sharon suggested that as a part of our project we nominate some trees for a project the treespotters commitee is running, so they can be recognized as some of the most significant trees in holliston. We chose to nominate a tree on Washington street and a tree next to St. Marys.
