A Step In The Right Direction
Sean MacLeod
My name is Sean MacLeod and I am a senior at Holliston High School and will be attending Villanova University in the fall. Environmental Science is a topic that has always fascinated me and taking Service Leaning gave me a great opportunity to help the Town of Holliston with sustainability projects. I am using this opportunity to work with town employees to apply for grants in order to put solar energy on schools in town.
Community Need
With global energy demands increasing and fossil fuel resources depleting, it is essential to adopt an alternative method to energize society. If we continue to rely heavily on fossil fuels as a source of energy, future generations will suffer from increased temperatures and more severe weather events. I chose to work on this issue because of a class I took last year. In that class I learned the potential dark future for generations to come if we do not take action and help save our environment.
Project Goals and Progress
My goal of this project is to work on a grant that the town can use to fund solar panels to put on schools in Holliston. Furthermore, I hope to learn more about the process of public funding and the pros and cons that go along with it. In addition to working on the grant, I am seeing if I can potentially get Holliston involved in the plugIN Metrowest program. I have hopes that this program will further help Holliston residents get involved in renewable energy.
Community Partnership
I am working with the Facilities Director in town on this project. He has been very helpful in answering any questions I have about the application process. Him and I also attend meetings with third party vendors to talk about the plan for putting solar on the schools and the funding that goes along with it. During these meetings I have learned the complexity of installing solar and why it is not as easy as buying panels and installing them.
