Book Club

Book Club 2022-23

In the English Book Club ELA, each person selects a book or two to read every cycle, and when we meet up, we discuss it together. We make posters about all the books, which incorporate key characters, themes and events, and we challenge each other to answer mock questions to prepare ourselves for the annual Inter-school Battle of the Books (BoB) competition towards the end of the year.

In the lead up to the external competition, an inter-house BoB competition was held in the junior form assembly. Although the competition only lasted for half an hour, it definitely boosted our performance during the actual competition and increased our knowledge of the selected books.  It also gave the house members something to cheer for!

This year’s BoB competition was held in HKIS. Even though we didn’t get through to the finals, it was such an exciting and fulfilling experience for us. At the start, we were all a bit nervous, but as we gained confidence, we got better and better every time we went on the stage! The schools we were up against had a strong reputation for their book club teams, but as relatively new competitors, we went out there and showed everyone that we’re a force to be reckoned with!

Book Club 2021-22

Book Club! A club where we read and discuss books. My idea of heaven! So… what exactly does Book Club involve?

Over the course of the year, we had a choice of 20 books to read, which had been pre-selected for the Hong Kong Battle of the Books Competition (BOB). We met every two weeks, and aimed to read two books per month… Some of us got pretty close to completing the full list!

During each meeting, small groups were formed and we discussed the concepts, ideas, themes and, most importantly, we shared our opinions about the books. It was so fascinating to hear the different perspectives on a book, just like everyone does with a newly-released film or a Netflix show.

We excitedly prepared for the Inter-school BOB competition by holding ‘buzzer’ quizzes and trial competitions. On the day of the competition, spirits were high! We shared our knowledge and went head-to-head with a number of renowned schools in Hong Kong. We eventually achieved second place within our group, which was a place we were all happy to be in! It was a thrilling and rich experience, and we can’t wait to improve on this next year.

If you love reading and sharing your opinions with like-minded people, do consider joining us next year!
