English Language

“The conquest of learning is achieved through the knowledge of languages.”

– Roger Bacon (c.1214 – 1294)

The philosophy of the English Department is to provide a holistic language education where students learn and develop the ability to express themselves confidently and fluently in what for most will be their second language. At a basic level, helping students to master basic literacy skills will give them more choices in life. However, we aspire also to inspire a love for the language and foster an appreciation of the written word. We aspire to develop their creativity and communication skills and the ‘soft’ transferable skills that are typically neglected in traditional local education but are essential in such a rapidly changing world. Above all, we aspire to cultivate students who are aware of global affairs and issues and who are eager to use their English language skills to engage in and explore the world around them.
