"This is my 7th year teaching at Hesperia High School. Prior to HHS, I graduated from the University of California, Riverside with a B.A. in English Literature; I also have an M.A. in Teaching from U.C. Irvine.
In 2018 a student, Jada, asked how I (or any other teacher on campus) include Black perspectives in our class curriculum to honor Black History Month. Just a few short years into my teaching career, I had no answer for her. I wasn't alone in my oversight; her inquiry brought to my attention that the Black History curriculum in schools tends to be lacking. As a biracial individual, I suddenly felt guilt at the experience my students were missing out on - learning about a rich, and sometimes painful, cultural background that has immensely shaped the society we live in today. As a result, our annual Black History Month event was born.
I never cease to be amazed at the creativity and skill our students will display when given the chance to explore. In spite of the pandemic and difficult situations all around, I am so proud to share our students' research and creations. These kids give me hope, and I can't wait to continue this tradition for years to come.
To all the students - past, present, and future - thank you!"
