Course Summaries

ART 1

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: None

Length: Year

This course meets UC/CSU (F) and District graduation requirements for Fine Arts. Art 1 is an introductory class that explores the techniques of drawing and painting. Students learn the elements and principles of good design as the basis for the creation of their class projects. Students sample from a variety of materials (media) including pencil, charcoal, tempera and watercolor paint, and scratch board.


ART 2

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Art 1

Length: Year

This course meets UC/CSU (F) and District graduation requirements for Fine Arts. This intermediate course in painting and drawing offers advanced work in various areas of art and deals with art trends from the past and present. Students will have the opportunity to explore individual artistic style and work in different media.


ART 3

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Art 2

Length: Year

This course meets UC/CSU (F) and District graduation requirements for Fine Arts. This is an advanced art course. This course introduces students to the concept of an overall portfolio and elaborates on philosophical concepts of art by implementing investigation. Students will learn how to use their skills in drawing, perspective, painting and sculpture to create a cohesive portfolio. Students will choose and experiment with mediums such as watercolor, tempera, graphite, charcoal, acrylic, clay, plastilina, and other forms of mixed media. Students will be encouraged to work from life, photographs, references, or imagination. Students will be exposed to different genres and styles of art that may include and are not limited to abstract, realism, surrealism, modern, postmodern, and other culture based movements. Students may be asked to participate in a group exhibition.
