AP ART HISTORY
Course Summary
Grade Level: 11-12
Prerequisite: None
Length: Year
This course meets UC/CSU (F) and District graduation requirements for social science. This course is designed to be the equivalent of a two semester college course. Therefore, the purpose of this class is not only to prepare students for the AP Art History Exam, but is also intended to reflect the rigor and learning of a college-level art history survey course. The class covers global art ranging from prehistoric times to the present and focuses on teaching students how to view these works through both visual and contextual analysis as well as discovering the connections among global artistic traditions. The course will teach students the fundamental visual aspects of artistic analysis (such as line, color, and composition) while stressing the importance of art and how it is interpreted in terms of its historical, social, political, cultural, and religious significance. It is not mandatory for students to take the AP exam, however, students who choose to not take the exam will not be eligible to receive college credit for the course.
