The majority of emphasis will be on the four modes of discourse (narration, description, exposition, and argumentation), and the majority of essays will focus on rhetorical analysis, argument and synthesis. Although fiction will be read, there is a large emphasis on non-fiction as well, the analysis of both occurring through a social, political (and sometimes economic) lens. Ultimately, the contents of this course will prepare students for the AP Exam, 55% of the AP Exam’s grade is derived from three timed essays and 45% of the AP Exam’s grade is multiple choice questions. It is not mandatory for students to take the AP exam, however, students who choose to not take the exam will not be eligible to receive college credit for the course.
