Physical Education

The course has been designed to allow learners to develop an appreciation of physical education in a wide range of contexts. It is designed to integrate theory and practice with an emphasis on the application of theoretical knowledge. Learners will develop an understanding of how the various theoretical concepts impact on their own performance, through the integration of theory and practice. Learners will also have the opportunity to develop an awareness of contemporary issues relevant to physical education and sport in Wales.


Structure of the course

Year 12 AS Unit 1

Exploring physical education Written examination : 1 3⁄4 hours 24% of A level qualification (60% of AS qualification) 72 marks. To assess all AS subject content. 1.Exercise physiology, performance analysis and training. 2.Sports psychology 3. Skill acquisition 4. Sport and society

Year 12 AS Unit 2

Improving personal performance in physical education Non-exam assessment 16% of A level qualification (40% of AS qualification) 48 marks. To assess

1. Practical performance in one activity as a player/performer and as a coach or official. 2. Personal Performance Profile

Year 13 Unit 3

Evaluating physical education Written examination: 2 hours 36% of qualification 90 marks. To assess all A level subject content.

1. Exercise physiology, performance analysis and training. 2. Sports psychology. 3. Skill acquisition. 4. Sport and society

Year 13 Unit 4

Refining personal performance in physical education Non-exam assessment 24% of qualification 60 marks. To assess:

1. Performance in one activity as a player/performer, coach or official. 2. Investigative Research


Career paths and next steps

Physical Education helps students develop a range of transferable skills, opens up many career paths, including those in sports science, sports coaching, physiotherapy, teaching and the forces.


FAQ about the subject

Do we have practical lessons?

The emphasis is that you participate in your chosen sport outside of school. We expect it to be your passion. There will be practical sessions to test your fitness levels and to develop your coaching skills.


Is there coursework?

Unit 2 (AS-level) and unit 4 (A-level) contain personal performance profile and investigative research. This is coursework based and involves independent study. You will be guided through step by step using google classroom.


How is my sport performance assessed?

Your sport performance is first assessed by your teacher in an organised moderation. You will then be required to attend an external moderation involving other schools. You may be asked to perform in this moderation.
