Business Studies

This course introduces learners to the dynamic business environment and the importance of entrepreneurial activity in creating business opportunities and sustaining business growth. It allows learners to develop an appreciation of the strategic, complex and interrelated nature of business issues from a local to global perspective. The subject delves into contemporary business issues relevant to the Welsh business environment. There is a focus on multinational businesses and the strategic decisions taken in order to survive in a competitive market. It is a well-rounded A Level that can be applicable to any chosen career path.


Structure of the course

The course is made up of 4 units over the two years:

Unit 1: Business Opportunities (15% of qualification) - written exam at the end of year 12.

Unit 2: Business Functions (25% of qualification) - written exam at the end of year 12.

Unit 3: Business Analysis and Strategy (30% of qualification) - written exam at the end of year 13.

Unit 4: Business in a Changing World (30% of qualification) - written exam at the end of year 13.


This specification provides a suitable foundation for the study of business or a related area through a range of higher education courses, progression to the next level of vocational qualifications or employment. Many students go on to study Business or related courses at university or apprenticeships. Business Studies lends itself to a variety of jobs in accountancy, management, marketing, consultancy, human resources, production management, project management and many more different vocations.


FAQ about the subject

Will we go on any trips? We aim to provide opportunities for students to visit local, national and/or international businesses. In the past we have visited Wickedly Welsh, Cadbury World, Bristol Zoo, the European Parliament and the Stella Artois Brewery in Brussels.

What other subjects do people study with Business? Many of our students study social sciences such as Sociology, Psychology, Government and Politics, History and Geography. Maths is also a popular choice, particularly for those seeking to pursue a career in Accounting or Finance. Business Studies is a broad subject and will sit well alongside many other subjects.
