Criminology

An understanding of criminology is relevant to many job roles within the criminal justice sector, social and probation work and sociology and psychology.

WJEC Level 3 Applied Diploma in Criminology is a qualification with elements of psychology, law and sociology that complements studies in humanities. This is an Applied General Level 3 qualification and is equivalent to one A Level.

This course offers exciting and interesting experiences that focus learning for 16-19 year-old learners and adult learners through applied learning, i.e. through the acquisition of knowledge and understanding in purposeful contexts linked to the criminal justice system.


Structure of the course

The course is made up of 4 mandatory units over the two years:


Unit 1: Changing Awareness of Crime (Internally Assessed)

Unit 2: Criminological Theories (Externally Assessed)

Unit 3: Crime Scene to Courtroom (Internally Assessed)

Unit 4: Crime and Punishment (Externally Assessed)


Each unit is worth 25% of the whole qualification. Units 1 and 2 will be studied in Year 12 and units 3 and 4 will be studied in Year 13.


Career paths and next steps

Studying Criminology will enable you to demonstrate skills which will benefit you in a range of careers such as independent learning, problem solving, research and presentation skills.

This qualification allows learners to gain the required understanding and skills to be able to consider employment within some aspects of the criminal justice system, e.g. the National Probation Service, the Courts and Tribunals Service or the National Offender Management Service. It is also relevant to those considering careers in Social Work, Youth Work, the Police Force, the Prison Service.

What does ‘internally assessed’ mean?

Internal assessment of WJEC vocational qualifications takes the form of controlled assessment. Controlled assessment tasks are like pieces of coursework, completed in class but under exam conditions. These elements of work will be marked by your teacher and moderated by WJEC.
