FAQ about the subject

What opportunities are available to expand my practical skills?

There are many opportunities to expand your performing skills at Haverfordwest High School. You will have weekly lessons taught by an instrumental specialist from the Pembrokeshire Music Service on your instrument or voice. To compliment this there is an extensive range of extra-curricular activities to get involved in. Currently the school holds weekly rehearsals for two Orchestras, a String Orchestra, Jazz Band, three Choirs, and many smaller vocal and instrumental ensembles. There are also opportunities for every pupil to get involved in school productions and other musical events.

What support is available to help me if I struggle in Music?

You will have access to full time music specialists at any time during the week. Pupils often access support from the teaching staff outside of lesson time when they can request one to one sessions. Pupils also benefit from the many peripatetic teachers who visit the school. To compliment this the school is actively involved in working with music professionals who offer workshops in performance and composition to enable pupils to develop their skills further.

What structure do the lessons follow?

The great thing about music lessons is that there are a variety of approaches to learning. You will access the more traditional lessons that cover the analysis and aural part of the course but also have less traditional composing lessons where the member of staff acts more like a mentor offering ideas for improvement. This is complimented by your weekly practical lessons with the peripatetic staff.

How much independent study is there?

You are expected to study your chosen instrument or voice independently on a regular basis. To enable you to do this there are rehearsal rooms within the department for you to use during study periods. You will also have the opportunity to use the excellent music composing packages on our computers at any time and receive support from members of staff whilst you do so. Analysis and listening exercises will also be set for you to complete independently.
