Further Maths

Further mathematics is for students who have a real passion for mathematics. It explores the subject to a deeper level than the standard A-Level mathematics course. It is a beautiful and fascinating subject, but also intellectually demanding and rigorous.

Prospective students who aspire to study the STEM subjects at the top Russell Group universities should consider studying Further Mathematics. Studying Further Mathematics will help at the application stage, but will also give students an advantage mathematically in their first year at university. Students of Further Mathematics also have a deeper understanding of the standard A-level course, giving them a significant advantage of achieving the highest grades at that level. There are some students who study the course simply out of interest and the intellectual rewards it brings with it.

Although Further Mathematics is a distinct A level qualification, undertaking the standard A-level course is a requisite.

Structure of the course

AS Unit 1 - Further pure mathematics A

AS Unit 2 - Further statistics A

AS Unit 3 - Further mechanics A

A2 Unit 4 - Further pure mathematics B

Then there is a choice of one of the following modules:

A2 Unit 5 - Further statistics B

A2 Unit 6 - Further mechanics B

Mathematical Skills

Maths is all about problem solving. Not only will you learn how to solve complex mathematical equations, but the skills you develop whilst working on mathematical functions will develop your problem-solving abilities in other ways, including:

  • Pattern spotting

  • Working backwards

  • Visualising

  • Working systematically

  • Using logical reasoning

The skills you learn through studying mathematics are skills you will use throughout your life. Just some of the transferable skills that a maths degree can give you include, data analysis, critical thinking, time management, communication and decision making.
