Are you working by yourself or in a team?
I am doing all of the editing but playing the game of checkers with Hunter. In a way, Hunter will be doing half the animation in that he is the opposing side in the game. Then I will do the other half of the animation and the filming.
What materials will you need for your project?
For this project, I will need a checkerboard with pieces, a tripod, and an iPad. The tripod will be quite important to this so I can have my hands free for animation. The iPad will also be used to edit and record the video.
What is your plan to create in this project?
I plan to create an animation detailing a game of checkers. I will take pictures as I play the game to form the animation. I will then edit it into a more easily watchable video.
What unique qualities will your project have?
My project will have the quality of being a more consumable entertaining version of a normally boring and monotonous thing. Normally when we depict checkers games we give a long string of coordinates that have to be translated onto the board. But with this method you can actually see how the moves are made,
On this day we filmed the bulk of the animation at a surprisingly quick rate. It was likely so quick because I had devised a recording strategy after looking into all of the different ways we could make the animation. I got exactly 190 frames total. I would like to ad that we used Ethan's checkerboard and I am grateful for him letting us use it.
On this day I made the decision to have the animation depicting three games instead of one. I recorded a game with Ethan on this day and it was a little shorter then the last one. I also worked on the website a bit on this day.
On this day I did some editing. Originally I planned to film the third game but my opponent was busy. I got some titles on the videos, attached them, and added a soundtrack.
On this day my original opponent withdrew from the game. But luckily Hunter was perfectly fine with having a rematch. We had to pause it though because the hour ended before the game.
On this day we quickly finished the game and began editing. I attached all of the videos with titles and music. I had small issues exportiing with iMovie but I got around them by downloading the video to my iPad then sending it.
Using iMotion, I created an animation because I wanted to depict a checkers game in a less boring and mundane way. I used an iPad and a tripod to film this animation. The editing for this video was done entirely in iMovie.
During this process, I learned that although it slows down the process of animation I should probably take more shots. The video came out a little choppy because I did not have many frames for every move. I thought that it would not be noticeable but it was.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Empowered Learner because this project was controlled nearly entirely by me in that I set my own goals and medium. I set my own goals on how I would depict this game of checkers and I utilized the technology around me to film and edit the video to meet how I wanted it depicted.
A challenge I overcame on this project was figuring out how I would animate it. I was able to do it by taking pictures as we moved the pieces. Originally I was going to write down moves but I had trouble using the grid coordinate system and it would have taken longer.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the animation to include more frames. The reason why I would change it is because I think it would be far smoother if it did. It is currently very choppy at its slow fps because of how few frames it has.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the Digital Multemedia CTE program at Hastings High School. It connects to Digital Multemedia because I utilized technology such as editing and stop-motion to make an entertaining video. My project connects to careers in stop-motion animation and content development. It connects to animation because I quite literally animated the project so I did what I would do in that job and connects to content development because of how I had to edit the video to make it entertaining and easily consumable.
