Are you working by yourself or in a team?
I am working mostly by myself on this project. I may occasionally employ other people's help to hold up some of the props. I may also occasionally employ other people's help if I find myself starved for ideas.
What materials will you need for your project?
I will need some materials to animate with like clay and legos. I will also need an iPad to take pictures and edit with. I think also I will get some string so I can make the floating effect.
What is your plan to create in this project?
I plan to create an animation of a Lego-person skateboarding. I will use a series of strings to make the tricks where they are not touching anything. I will shoot this entirely on my iPad
What unique qualities will your project have?
My project will have the qualities of being mainly based on entertainment but also innovating with what I have. I will have to use different techniques to produce interesting effects with limited materials. Hence this project has to both be somewhat entertaining but also innovating.
After a delay in my original plan for my first project I switched over to this one and set up this site. Luckily I started my first project ahead of time so I still have quite a bit of time to work on this one. I began brainstorming ideas for the contents of the animation.
I made a storyboard for my stop motion. I would have started animation on this day but sadly I forgot my materials. This was also the day I filled out my planning questions.
On this day I began animating.; using materials I got from my house I filmed a few tricks. I made a Nollie, a kickflip, and a fakie-kickturn. I decided that rather than using string more rigid paper would work.
On this day I recorded a couple more tricks. Though suddenly my iPad kicked me out and would not let me get into the iMotion app. To use my time wisely I planed out the rest of my animation.
On this day I realized that the glitch from yesterday had erased my animation. I did not back it up so there were only two options. Either quit the animation and struggle together another filler project or redoe it. Being that I was already planning to make revision to my animation I chose the latter.
On this day I redid most of the animation at home. I filmed it mostly on my phone camera and this caused a slight difference in quality. Though I had some terrain on hand so the background was nicer.
On this day I filmed a few more extra scenes and wrapped up the video. This is the day I filmed the end credit on and did some of the editing. Not much was done overall though..
On this day I finished editing. I added the soundtrack and the titles. I messed around with the speed to make certain parts of the stopmotion smoother.
Using iMotion, I created a stop-motion incorporating floating. I did this because I wanted to combat the problem I had in one of my previous animations of always requiring a strong point of contact with the ground. I originally thought I would do this with string but later ended up utilizing paper.
During this process, I learned that when you are trying to get a certain effect with your animation you will likely have to sacrifice certain aspects for others. Like convenience for aesthetics or visa versa. This was demonstrated by the paper or string decision
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Empowered Learner because I independently had to figure out what I wanted to do with this project how I wanted to do it and how I would know if I did it correctly. I also had to use the technology for photography and editing available to me to make my animation meet my own goals. This of course demonstrates an empowered learner because it is all about leveraging technology around you to meet your goals.
A challenge I overcame on this project was making the floating effect. At first, I thought I would use a fishing line but it got tangled up in itself and did not stick well. I was able to do it by using a thin strip of paper instead because it was visible but far more rigid so it worked better.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the length of the animation. The reason why I would change it is because I thought a half-minute animation would be long enough but I did not really delve far into skateboarding tricks. The main reason I did not make it longer was because of my failure to back up most of the footage which led to a lot of refilming.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project connects to the Digital Multimedia CTE program at Hastings High School. It connects to this program in particular because of the more editing-based side of this project where I tweaked the FPS and added soundtracks, Digital Multimedia is all about things like editing and filming videos. My project connects to careers in animation and other film-related fields, the interesting thing about the career correction for this project is that I would be doing nearly the exact same thing as a career just more advanced.
