Are you working by yourself or in a team?
I am working on this team with Grant on this project.
What materials will you need for your project?
For this project, I will need cardboard and hot glue.
What is your plan to create in this project?
I plan to construct an elevator to lift pencils and markers out of the cup storing them.
What unique qualities will your project have?
Rather than building something that already is popularized we built something that is an original combination of other concepts.
I made a list of ten good ideas and answered planning questions.
We began constructing the elevator for the pencil holder.
We began constructing the elevator shaft.
We added a handle to lift the elevator to the top of the shaft.
We improved the walls by extending them with scrap cardboard.
We added the finishing touches like the hooks stopping the elevator from falling out.
Using cardboard and hot glue, I created a cup that has an elevator to lift pencils out of it to be more accessible. I made this because. Find it annoying digging through pencil cups. So I made a solution to this problem by making a design that makes the pencils more accessible.
During this process, I learned about the design process as I worked with the mechanism to suit my projects needs.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative Designer because I tinkered with my design in ways I didn't originally foresee to make it more effective.
A challenge I overcame on this project was my issues with the elevator not smoothly climbing up the shaft. I was able to do it by gluing in peices of spare cardboard to make it a tighter fit in places where it was too lose.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the center of the elevator to have a wall going down the middle. The reason why I would change it is because sometimes when your using the pencil holder the pencils will slip down and fall in the middle making them harder to grab with the handle.
